Terms

Short, plain, and honest — the way a promise should read.

1. What Never Far is

Never Far is a quiet place to keep a line a day — words, a photo, a voice note — which are assembled into a story over time, and a way for the people you choose to receive a status update if you go quiet. That is the whole product.

2. What Never Far is not — please read this twice

Never Far is not a safety monitor, not an emergency service, and not a welfare check. A status update is the last thing you wrote, possibly days ago — it does not reflect your current condition. We do not monitor your safety, we do not verify your wellbeing, we do not contact emergency services, and we cannot know whether you are alright right now.

  • If you are worried about someone, call them.
  • If you believe someone is in danger, call 911.

3. Not a legal instrument

Never Far is not a will, not an estate plan, and not legal advice. Letters you seal are messages between you and the people you chose; they carry no legal effect, and we will never claim otherwise. Delivery is a service we perform on a best-effort basis — we try hard, but we cannot guarantee it.

4. Your content is yours

What you write belongs to you. It is encrypted on your device before it reaches us; we store ciphertext we cannot read. You can export everything at any time, on any plan, including during a wind-down. We do not sell your data, we do not read your data, and we do not train AI on your data unless you explicitly turn AI features on.

4a. Voice transcription

Transcription is the one feature where a recording briefly leaves encryption, and only because you asked: when you tap Transcribe, your device decrypts that one recording and sends it — with the text — to our transcription provider (OpenAI) to be read back to you. The audio passes through our server in memory only; we never store it. What comes back is encrypted on your device before it is saved. We keep a monthly count of minutes, nothing else. If you never tap Transcribe, your recordings stay sealed — exportable and playable offline with your password, forever.

4b. Letters that arrive later

A sealed letter reaches its reader through a link you send them. The link carries a key that we never see — the letter's content stays encrypted until your reader's own device decrypts it. We can see the opening date and the one name you chose for the reader (like “Mom”); that is all. Because the link is the key, anyone who holds the full link can open the letter on its day — send it the way you would send something precious. If a link is trimmed by an email app, the key is lost and the letter cannot be read; your reader can also keep a copy for themselves with one tap, so a letter can outlive us.

5. Guardians and relationships

A guardian is someone you know, who has agreed. The relationship — and the responsibility in it — is between the two of you. We verify nothing about it: we do not check identities, we do not confirm relationships, and we do not decide who should hear from you. We carry words; we do not judge bonds. If a guardian is worried, they should call you. If they believe someone is in danger, they should call 911.

6. If we ever close

We cannot promise to live forever, so we built the exit first: 90 days' notice before any shutdown, export available until the final day, and key shards that live with the people you chose — not with us.

7. Accounts

Keep your password safe. We cannot reset it for you — we never had it. If you lose it without a recovery code, your encrypted notes stay sealed forever, and that is the price of a system nobody can read. A recovery code, set while you are signed in, wraps the same key a second time so a forgotten password is survivable; it is shown once and never stored by us.

8. Fair use

Don't use Never Far to harass, threaten, or break the law. This is run by one person, not a company: lawful requests are answered by the same person who answers support, and we will tell you when we can.

9. Changes

If these terms change, we will say so plainly on this page, with the date. Continuing to use Never Far means you accept the current version.
